SHRM Foundation Raffle

We will once again be holding a raffle to benefit the SHRM Foundation at the May and July monthly luncheon meetings. We will be giving away five paid registrations to the Indiana State SHRM Conference to be held on August 28th – 30th. We gave away three registrations at the May meeting and will be giving away the last two in July. Members may purchase a raffle ticket for $5/each and attend the July meeting for a chance to win. There are two ways members can purchase raffle tickets – when they register for the meetings or at the meetings. You must be an HRACI member to enter and be present to win. If you did not win in May, your ticket will stay in for the July drawing.

If you are unfamiliar with what the SHRM Foundation does, you may want to look at their website for more information http://www.shrm.org/foundation. The Foundation funds research, publications and education to advance the HR profession and enhance the effectiveness of HR professionals. We have another special treat for the July meeting – during the networking portion of the meeting, from 11:30 – 12:00 p.m., we will be showing the “HR in Alignment – The Link to Business Results” DVD which is a product the SHRM Foundation created. The video, narrated by Dr. Wayne Cascio, presents a real-world case study of Sysco Food Services Company, North America's largest food-service distributor. It examines how HR strategy is aligned with the overall competitive strategy to drive business results. So, we hope you’ll join us and take advantage of this opportunity.

Compensation & Benefits Conference Recap

By Keisha Underwood & Mike Jenkins

On June 15, 2006, the HRAI held a half day Compensation and Benefits Conference sponsored by Century 21 Sheetz Relocation Services. The guest speaker, John Rubino, presented to a group of 85 professionals on an alternative to today’s “base salary merit increase” method. John is the author of “Designing Successful Compensation Programs to Attract and Retain the Best and theBrightest.” He is an internationally acclaimed motivational speaker. His presentations are very engaging, funny and larger than life. He is a very highly rated speaker with the World At Work organization. John explains how to establish a direct link between performance and rewards in designing a total cash compensation program.

John’s alternative, known as the Variable Compensation Program, derives from the increasing negative factors associated with the current method. Base merit increases have the potential to foster mediocrity and limit the retention of good employees.

The Variable Compensation Program is a cultural/behavioral change and may not work in every organization. This program focuses on individual and group incentives such as measured output, profit sharing, performance sharing and equity. The program creates high turnover. Many times mediocre employees leave and the best and brightest stay.

10 criteria for successful Variable Programs were outlined: 1.) A successful plan is aligned with organizational culture/values, 2.) A successful plan is fair to employee, 3.) A successful plan is fair to the organization, 4.) A successful plan sets total compensation (Total Rewards), 5.) A successful plan yields financial returns to employees, 6.) A successful plan yields financial returns to the company, 7.) a successful plan involves employees and managers, 8.) A successful plan uses internal and external data, 9.) A successful plan sets forth clear performance goals, 10.) A successful plan achieves clarity through communication.

For more information on Variable Compensation Programs, download a copy of John Rubino's presentation here.
